Dr. Harrahs N. Malinda: Dept Coordinator.

Child development study  is important to enable us understand and intervene appropriately in the children’s  emotional, social, spiritual,  psychological functioning, as well as in their cognitive and  physical/medical well being. For a comprehensive understanding of the child’s growth and development process, this study is necessary to enable us understand the processes underlying child behavior to and the environmental contexts which affects a child’s growth and development process.

A good understanding of the environmental context in which the child is raised involves the social environment, the physical environment and the spiritual context. Child development study will lead us to innovative intervention strategies that will benefit children in their everyday lives.

Our courses are designed to give a comprehensive understanding and intervention strategies which Christian professionals in ministry to children can use in enhancing the growth and development of children.  They also provide knowledge on the impact of a child’s deviant care-giving and traumatic events, such as maltreatment or sexual abuse, that occur in the child’s life, and how these experiences affect the development of the child’s emotions and cognitions.

Further, our courses address both normal and deviant cognitive, social, spiritual and emotional development of the child. Children with autism and disabilities and the effects of pre-natal and post-natal experiences are covered at great detail and depth showing their effects on childrens' growth and development. Children with special needs education is highlighted to provide good understanding on  the special needs that they have which the society doesn’t always recognize. Our courses provide students with ways in which to identify children with developmental problems and delays as well as ways to nurture their gifts and talents to enable them make substantial contribution to the society. Students are also exposed to knowledge on how to enhance children growth and development through initiation of appropriate home, educational and community intervention programs.

Upon completion of their course work, students are exposed to fieldwork practice in child focused organizations in the private and public sectors. The aim of the practicum is to assist students in integrating their learning and field experiences as preparation for beginning professional practice in Child Development. Students are exposed to situations in the field which enable them to integrate practical experience and theoretical knowledge as the student works directly with children living in Childcare settings, families and communities.

With the gained knowledge, graduate students are able to do the following among others:

  • Examine and develop living and learning environments, materials and interactions which foster meaningful growth and development of children.
  • Adapt classroom environments, programs, curriculum and attitudes to facilitate the learning of children with special needs.
  • Learn effective ways on how to relate biblical theological understanding of Ministry to Children to key practices involving children.
  • Understand the problems and challenges children face at each phase of development and intervene appropriately.
  • Manage, monitor and evaluate child development programs based on standards and indicators for best practices.
  • Design and utilize research methods appropriate to Children
